Sustainability

#bettershopping

Sustainability means taking responsibility where we have an impact: at our center, in Wustermark and throughout the region. That is why we focus on concrete measures for the responsible use of energy and resources, promote biodiversity on our site and support the people and organizations in our local community.

Sustainable Planning and Operations

Designer Outlet Berlin was built in accordance with the standards of the international BREEAM sustainability certification. The assessment covers various aspects of a building and its operation, including building materials, energy supply, waste management, rainwater use, mobility and site accessibility.
We also take a conscious approach to energy use in our day-to-day operations. A flexible open-door policy supports our stores in using heating and cooling systems according to actual needs.

Green Energy and Efficient Lighting

Designer Outlet Berlin is powered by 100% green energy. In addition, photovoltaic systems installed on the roofs generate part of the electricity we need directly on site.
We also consistently use LED technology for our lighting. LEDs require less energy and have a longer lifespan than conventional light sources. This not only reduces operating costs, but also helps lower CO₂ emissions. At the same time, modern lighting ensures even and reliable illumination, contributing to a sustainable and future-oriented overall concept.

We encourage e-mobility

In parking lot 2, ten e-charging stations are available. With this, we actively promote electromobility and make an important contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions as well as decreasing air pollution. At the same time, we set a visible sign of environmental awareness and sustainable action. Furthermore, with this offer, we meet the needs of our visitors, as more and more people are switching to electric vehicles and expect a reliable charging infrastructure.

Using Water Responsibly

Our irrigation systems ensure that green spaces receive the right amount of water exactly where it is needed. This helps optimize water consumption and avoid unnecessary waste. In addition, we implement water-saving measures to conserve resources sustainably.
The use of a robotic lawn mower enables efficient and consistent maintenance of our green spaces while reducing energy and labor requirements. Our cleaning service providers are also encouraged to save water and use exclusively environmentally friendly, certified cleaning products.

Creating Space for Native Species

Our outdoor areas are designed to contribute to biodiversity. Nesting boxes provide native bird species with additional breeding and shelter opportunities. Wildflower meadows create habitats and sources of food for bees, butterflies and other pollinators.
For seasonal planting, we also prioritize native plants that are adapted to local conditions and support the region’s wildlife. Beyond our own site, we are committed to preserving nature in the surrounding area and, among other initiatives, work with the Heinz Sielmann Foundation in the Döberitzer Heide nature reserve.

Rethinking Resources

Together with our waste management and service partners, we ensure that waste is separated at source according to different recyclable material categories.
Materials that have fulfilled their original purpose can also be given a second life: discarded advertising banners are upcycled into new bags. Through the “Better Shopping” drop-off box, visitors can also donate clothing that is still in good condition. The collected items are then passed on to humanitarian organizations.

At Home in the Region

Wustermark is more than just a location for us. That is why it is important to us to give something back to the local community. We support local clubs and events as well as social organizations that help people in need.
This also includes our cooperation with the local fire department. Together, we raise awareness of the important work they do and support their commitment, including through fundraising campaigns. In this way, our connection to the region becomes tangible and helps keep our local community vibrant and strong.

A Center for Everyone

Everyone should be able to enjoy a relaxed visit. That is why Designer Outlet Berlin is accessible at ground level and designed to be barrier-free — from the parking areas and pathways between the stores to the sanitary facilities.
When developing the center further and planning new construction measures, we therefore consider accessibility from the very beginning.
